“The reaction of professional users to antipiracy actions", by examining the impact of two major antipiracy actions, the closure of Megaupload and the implementation of the French antipiracy law (HADOPI), on professional publishers behavior in the largest BitTorrent portal who are major providers of online copyrighted content. To this end, five of our conducted studies are presented in this manuscript as follows: - “The evolution of multimedia contents", which presents a thorough analysis on the evolution of multimedia content available in BitTorrent by focusing on four relevant metrics across different content categories: content availability, content popularity, content size and user's feedback.
In this thesis, we characterize the behavior of regular and professional users in the two mentioned popular services (OSNs and P2P systems) in terms of publishing strategies, content consumption and behavioral analysis. Apart from the huge popularity of OSNs and P2P systems among regular users, they are being intensively used by professional players (big companies, politician, athletes, celebrities in case of OSNs and professional content publishers in case of P2P) in order to interact with people for different purposes (marketing campaigns, customer feedback, public reputation improvement, etc.). On the other hand, P2P systems, which are still one of the popular services with a large proportion of the whole Internet traffic, provide a golden opportunity for their customers to share different type of content including copyrighted content. OSNs provide a virtual environment where people can share their information and interests as well as being in contact with other people. Two of the very popular Internet services with this characteristic are Online Social Networks (OSNs) and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems. Popular Internet services are fundamentally shaping and reshaping traditional ways of people communication, thus having a major impact on their social life.
Finally, we have discovered that a significant portion of the studied peers (45%) have an important locality-biased neighbourhood composition. Furthermore, we also find that a leecher typically keeps stable connections with a handful of neighbours with which it exchanges most of its traffic whereas seeders do not establish long-term connections with any peer so that they can homogeneously distribute chunks among leechers. The analysis of the peer level connectivity properties reveals that peers continuously change more than half of their neighbours.
The main topology parameters of the studied swarms suggest that they are significantly less resilient than random graphs. In this paper we leverage a dataset including the connectivity information of 250 real torrents and more than 150k peers to carefully study the connectivity properties of peers. Despite of its interest, we still have little knowledge regarding the connectivity properties of real BitTorrent swarms. Furthermore, we provide possible solutions to address the described challenges.īitTorrent is one of the most important applications in the current Internet. The article also summarizes the main challenges faced by the research community to accurately measure the BitTorrent ecosystem such as accurately identifying peers and estimating peers' upload rates. Finally, complementary techniques utilize recent extensions to the BitTorrent protocol in order to obtain both aggregated and peer-level information. They offer higher granularity but do not scale as well as macroscopic techniques.

Microscopic techniques operate at the peer level and focus on understanding performance aspects such as the peers¿ download rates. Macroscopic techniques allow us to collect aggregated information of torrents and present very high scalability, able to monitor up to hundreds of thousands of torrents in short periods of time. The techniques are classified into macroscopic, microscopic, and complementary. In this article we present the first survey of these techniques that constitutes a first step in the design of future measurement techniques and tools for analyzing large-scale systems. In the last years the research community has studied the BitTorrent ecosystem by collecting data from real BitTorrent swarms using different measurement techniques. BitTorrent is the most successful peer-to-peer application.
